History. In 1986, Ken Hunter solicited the expertise of world-renowned golf course architect Robert Muir Graves and set out to develop the finest, purest test of golf he could imagine. It started with a great location - 309 acres of gently rolling, oak studded, ancient sand hills 30 miles north of Santa Barbara. This stunning layout traces the valley floor before climbing to hilly terrain marked by huge oaks, slick perched greens, and giant sculpted bunkers. During his 50 years of practice in golf architecture, Robert Muir Graves created some of more memorable golf experiences, mostly in the Western States, but also on the Algarve in Portugal, and in Malaysia. He has been internationally acclaimed for his ability to find the most ideal golf solution within existing landscapes. La Purisima Golf Course is noted in the Architects own biography, as one of his most memorable designs. Since its opening in 1986, La Purisima has hosted the Final Stage of PGA TOUR School, US Open Qualifying, the LPGA Santa Barbara Open, PGA Senior Tour Qualifiers, receiving accolades from Golf Magazine (Top 100 Public Courses in America), Golf Digest (4 1/2 Star Rating Best Places to Play), and the LA Times (Top Ten "Must Play Courses").
In 2013, the course was purchased by two local Santa Barbara developers. Since the takeover, numerous course improvements have been made, while maintaining the essence of the golf course … pure golf in its natural environment. In 2015, La Purisima was voted as “Best in Southern California” in a vote conducted by Greenskeerper.org. This vote wasn’t made by golf writers, it was made by golfers. Most recently in 2015, the course played host to the Final Stage PGA Tour Canada Qualifying School, the Gateway Tour, two Golden State Tour events, as well as US Open and US Amateur Qualifying.
Playing La Purisima. And pure golf is what you get. A challenging test of skill and character, La Purisima rewards the bold and leaves the recently-hooked newcomer loving the game even more. It is beautiful in its naturally undulating landscape, challenging in its hole designs, with tees never far from the preceding greens. La Purisima is a remarkably enjoyable walk, or a pleasant ride on our power carts. We don't believe in tricky designs with waterfalls, island greens, and railroad ties. We believe in the essence of playing golf in a natural environment.
The critics wasted no time in chiming in. The course at La Purisima has twice received four and a half stars from readers of Golf Digest, including the 2004 poll (only famed Pebble Beach ranked higher), and was ranked Best in County by Greenskeeper.org.
"Outstanding, an excellent value.... A total hidden gem.... A nice setting with spectacular vistas and rolling hills."
