    December 2009 Newsletter

The forecasters are calling for a very wet El Nino type spring. So that means December is the month to come and sharpen your game. Jason has both courses in awesome shape with the greens bordering on illegal in the speed category. To our members, don't forget about the "refer a friend and get a free round" part of the 2010 membership package.  All you do is refer a new member and get a free round of golf!

Hunter Ranch News
130 players participated in the 6th annual Golf for a Cure tournament at Hunter Ranch Golf Course on Friday, November 13th. The event was a benefit for the Andreas Knickman Fund. 13 year old Andreas was recently diagnosed with bone cancer requiring his knee and femur to be removed and replaced with prosthetics.  His father Roy is a Firefighter with the Paso Robles Fire Department.  There was plenty of support not only from Roy's department but other fire departments from inside and outside the county. Lost balls and missed putts couldn't dampen the mood of this group.  The fun throughout the day combined with the spirit of supporting a worthy cause made this event very special.  Tournament director, Judy Bremer, would like to thank all the volunteers and the many local businesses for their tee sponsorships and donated items.  Special thanks go out to San Luis Ambulance, Abe and Vel Flory and the Paso Robles Inn for their major sponsorships.  Because of the tremendous support the tournament raised over $27,000 for the Knickman Fund.

Hunter Ranch Players Club Tournament News Team Grundmeier prevail in the club championship.  Todd Grundmeier shot 79-76 to win the gross championship by three shots over Andrew Sherman.  His father, Don Grundmeier, shot an even par 74-70 to win the net division by two shots over Jack MacDonald.  Kimberly Pech shot a pair of 82's to win the women's championship.  Thank you to everyone who participated in this two-day event. Sunday, December 13th is the final club tournament for the year.  This will be an individual skins game with skins awarded for gross and net skins.  Players club members from Hunter Ranch and La Purisima and their guests are welcomes.  There is a $10 buy-in for gross and a $10 buy-in for net skins.  The event will be a shotgun start beginning at 10:00.  Please call the golf shop to enter.

Pro Tip by Mike Bremer, PGA - Consistency More often than not, when I ask a student what they are looking for in their game, the response is consistency.  What they really mean is they want to hit their good shots more often.  I don't think anybody's goal is to hit the ball consistently 40 yards right of the target.  There is no shortcut to hitting consistently good shots.  The more your swing is fundamentally sound, the less you have to rely on timing.  Any flawed swing can produce a good shot from time to time as long as a series of adjustments occur in the proper order at the proper time.  The more adjustments required to return the clubhead to the correct position the less often it will happen correctly.  Get a jump start on the new year and have a swing check-up with one of our Golf Professionals.  We will get you on a path to a more fundamentally sound golf swing.

La Purisima Player's Club Tournament News
Congratulations to Zeric Hulvey going low and winning the Players Club championship and to Martin Herrera for taking net. Both players have been a model of consistency all year long. November winners in the popular two person aggregate format were the father son combo  of Jim and Jimmy Clesson. They shot a 164 for the combined total. Net winners with a score of 151 went to Rocky Bell and Steve Klock. Upcoming on Sunday December 13th is the annual end of year giant skins game. Skins will be awarded in both net and gross divisions. There are still plenty of openings so call us at 735-8395 to sign up. Don't forget you can check all the upcoming tournaments and results on the website under Players Club or click the link below.  We will soon be posting the 2010 tournament schedule. If anyone ever has a suggestion for a new tournament format or ways we can improve our events, please don't hesitate to contact Perry or Marcus.   Tournament Schedule

Superintendent Update                                                    Fall is here and hopefully we will have the warm wet winter most of the experts are calling for.  We really need the rain to leach out the sodium built up in the soil from the lack of rain the last five years.  Once the sodium levels are reduced plant health and vigor increases.  This is mainly due to the improvement in root development and that translates into a healthier plant.  However, with the rain comes wind and the combination of the two spells trouble for un-pruned trees.  Trees that are not properly pruned will drop branches when they are wet and the wind is excessive.  That is why this is a great time of year to do any pruning or thinning that your trees may need.  Being proactive will prevent damage from falling limbs, loss of old beautiful trees, as well as injuries from falling branches.  If you do not have knowledge of proper pruning techniques it is always best to research the correct method for your tree or call an arborist. We frequently get people driving by the course stopping in to check out our green fee rates. This typically leads into conversation about the our Players Club program. I thought it might be interesting to see what a tremendous value being a member entails. Lets say this person comes in as a new member in December and does not want a handicap. This person would pay an up front fee of $199 to join. Now we'll assume they play once a month and use their one free round coupon. If they played 6 times during the week and 6 times on the weekend as a member the cost would be $552 (with cart). This assumes the free round they got when signing up was used on a weekend. As a member they would also receive awards points valued at $27.60. Non members would simply pay $1,164 for the same 12 rounds. So the savings for being a member is $440.60 under this scenario. That same membership also includes four preferred guest passes where the member can bring out four friends throughout the year at their green fee rate. They could also use the 2 four for $100 and 2 four for $140 coupons on friends and relatives throughout the year. All told the extra coupons save up to an additional $580. The best part about joining is you get a dual membership at both Hunter Ranch and La Purisima Golf Courses. What a deal! For more information on being a  member please click here

See you on the first tee!
