With 2009 behind us we are gearing up for an exciting 2010. Up first we have the annual Super Bowl Square game where with every paid round you get to choose a square and potentially win some excellent pro shop prizes. Following the Super Bowl we get ready for Marti Gras and March Madness. The much talked about "basketball hoop" will reappear until the Final Four is over. In case you missed it last year we put a regulation basketball hoop at regulation height in the pro shop. Then with every paid round you get a chance to win a FREE cart ($14 value). There is no fee to shoot the hoop but if you miss you have to pay for your cart. So come out and put some pressure on your buddies and see if they can take the heat. Stacie has the golf shop looking awesome with many name brands at special low prices. Don't forget you can spend your awards balance and shop credit on merchandise at 20% off! Just a reminder new for the 2010 membership are "refer a friend" and get a FREE round, 20% off all non sale golf shop merchandise and a $20 range key bonus. We look forward to seeing all our members out in 2010. As many of you know the SCGA has switched over the the GHIN system of handicapping. This means you must now add a 9 before your old SCGA number to post a score. This will take a little getting used to, but will add new updated features to posting and viewing your handicap. Well I don't need to tell you about all of the rain we have had. I'm happy to say both Hunter Ranch and La Purisima take the rain really well. The design features of the golf courses allow for good drainage and prevent most of the standing water problems many other courses have. This enables us to be very playable right after it rains. Though the rain inhibits golf for a short time the benefits to the golf courses out way the inconvenience we may feel as golfers. These rains are essential to leach the sodium out of the soils. Sodium build up reduces plant vigor and turf health. Having the soils low in sodium will translate into better turf in the summer months. This is due to the improved root development and drainage that occurs because of the increase in the porosity of the soil. The increased porosity allows for better gas exchange and water movement through the soil profile. What that means to you is a more lush turf canopy with a firmer surface. This will give you a better lie and more roll in the fairways. If you have any questions you can email me at

Pro Tip by Ken Zimet - A Solid Structure
When I see certain golfers struggling often their swings are either too short or too long. Usually they are too long. Normally I ask the student it they know when their backswing ends and when the downswing begins. In 12 years I have never received an accurate response. To clarify I will quote the great Ken Venturi for whom I worked for as a senior golf instructor prior to coming to La Purisima. Mr. Venturi said, "The backswing ends when the left shoulder hits the chin. The downswing starts an instant before the backswing is completed." Practice this concept to greatly improve your ball striking. It is a fundamental you can count on. For lesson rates and information email me at

Down the Middle by Perry Hallmeyer PGA Head Professional
We have been getting many questions about playing in tournaments here at La Purisima. Many of you have never played in any sort of competition and are intimidated by the thought of playing with strangers and counting every stroke. I have a few suggestions that may alleviate the first tee jitters. First would be to know that all levels of players compete in our events. All you need is a current handicap and you are in. We have players from 0 to 40 handicap compete and win in their respective divisions. If you don't know any other players that is OK, we will pair you with a group of members with similar handicaps. Second idea is to keep an eye on your players club email and come out for our first annual Players Club nine hole mixer. We are going to schedule a Friday afternoon nine hole four person scramble with light horsd'oeuvres and drinks after golf. This event will introduce you to other members in a fun, non stressful setting while still playing competitivly. Keep checking your emails for the exact date and time. I am beginning to see many 2010 Players Club members accumulate many dollars on their Players Club Awards Balance. Don't forget that for every $ you spend at La Purisima, you get a 5% credit on the books. Awards dollars can be used for anything except food and beverage. The best part about joining is you get a dual membership at both Hunter Ranch and La Purisima Golf Courses. What a deal! For more information on being a member please click here .
See you on the first tee!
